The Social Experiment

So maybe it is just the sociologist in me- but I find this show really intriguing. It is on ABC- check it out.
They basically pose real life situations, and kind of sit back and wait to see how people respond. Some of them are meant to be a little comical- like sending the "American" stereotype to Paris. Others are very interesting social experiments. These are the ones that intrigue me. The first one that I watched was an experiment that was done with someone asking for a little help paying for gas. This experiment was done at the height of the gas prices- so asking for a couple of gallons of gas from someone is asking for 20 bucks.
They started with a guy doing it, and he was fairly successful. Then they sent in a girl to see what difference it would make. Initially, they both started out with a clunker car. Then the sent the girl in with a luxury SUV. Still- people were more willing to help the girl out, more then they did the guy. There was one guy, a Hispanic man, who spoke little English, helped her out. They later used him in the experiment. They used the old clunker car. It was really interesting- the men were willing to help him out, but women did not.
The experiment was really an eye opener. This Hispanic young man- who works at a restaurant, barely makes any money, and he was willing to give his money to help this lady out. But when the tables were turned, the women were not willing to help him out. He was a little discouraged at first, but after it all he still said that he has faith in people- that they would still do the right thing in the end.
So many social experiments- go watch

PS- I now love the name Esperanza- he used the word Esperanza- which I did not know that it meant Hope. I love that name now...
